Welcome!

I’m a 42-year-old half-British/half-Swedish man living in York, England. My faith informs my life and my work; I’m a Christian, more specifically Catholic, and even more specifically a Lay Carmelite. I’m gay. I want to be part of a kinder planet. I have a PhD in Medieval Literature. I love Marmite and food in general too much. Kindness fan.

Hi! I’m Johan (or Jo if you prefer).

Welcome to my personal website.

Thanks for visiting. Here you can find out about me, as well as some of the people and issues I care about.

This website is in development over the summer of 2021; please check back as I add more content.

More about …

My faith (including work and volunteering)

For nearly two decades I worked as Communications & Outreach Manager for the Carmelites, a Catholic religious order of which I’m also a professed lay member. I’m also very involved in the Church through pilgrimages to Lourdes, ecumenical collaboration, involvement in my local parish and diocese, and other ministries. The Good News of God’s love means that Christians have a responsibility to the common good, and I’m involved in various efforts to promote justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.

Academia: my research, teaching, publishing

I have a doctorate in medieval English literature, and am passionate about the Middle Ages. I’m a tutor with the Carmelite Institute of Britain & Ireland.

My other interests

I love Ben Dog, gaming, music, literature, movies, cooking, travelling. But definitely Ben Dog first.

My personal story

You can read a bit about me as a person, beyond what I do.
